The Perfect Lasagna is Easier Than You Think
Everyone’s grandma, mother, or other family member has made that one dish of “perfect” lasagna. If you have yet to get your hands on the family secret recipe, you may be left struggling to develop your perfect recipe. This means finding the right ingredients and adding your own flair to the process. Have you tried making perfect lasagna with garlic cloves, celery, chopped tomatoes, and onion as a part of your ingredients list?
Start with your vegetables, chop your celery, carrot, onion, and crush the garlic. Cook them slightly in a skillet seasoning them to taste. Add your beef stock, tomato puree and chopped tomatoes. Cook the entire mixture over low heat for ten minutes, with lid.
Melt margarine or low fat spread in pan over low heat, too hot and you risk scorching the butter. Slowly add the flour, stirring constantly as you go. Once you have added all the flour and beat out the lumps, begin adding milk. Remove from heat, add nutmeg, and set aside for later.
Brown ground beef, breaking it up as you go along. You want fine ground beef particles when fully cooked. Add browned beef to tomato sauce mixture.
In an oven proof dish begin layering in meat sauce, noodles, meat sauce, noodles etc. until you get near the top of your dish. Your last layer should be fresh lasagna noodles over which you will spoon the white sauce you created earlier.
Pop in the oven, bake at 350 for approximately 25-35 minutes, watching carefully to make sure it does not brown too much too soon. If you notice excessive browning, you can cover the dish with aluminum foil.
How to Make a French Style Lasagna
The French usually have their own take on recipes and, just like many other cultures, they have taken lasagna to their hearts. In France, cooks like to make lasagna with leeks, salmon, and mascarpone cheese, for an aromatic and tasty flavor. Thyme, eggs, parmesan, and butter add to the richness of the dish, and this is often served with a chilled white wine and some tossed salad.
Another French version of lasagna includes ratatouille lasagna. This dish includes ratatouille and bechamel sauce (white sauce) which are both typical of French cuisine. Vegetable lasagna is always delicious and you can take your vegetable to the next level by using ratatouille instead of plain sliced veggies. Ratatouille is made by slow-cooking vegetables with herbs and garlic, until the mixture is aromatic and tender.
Southern French Lasagna
If you order a lasagna in the south of France, it might contain an eclectic combination of porcini mushrooms, shallots, fennel (the vegetable not the spice), cream, wine, gruyere and more. A dash of Pernod, Ricard or a similar anise liqueur is a popular touch, and this enhances the licorice-like taste of the fennel. The French favor egg lasagna noodles.
