Even though the quickest way to cook frozen lasagna is by getting it out of the freezer the day before and letting it thaw out in the refrigerator overnight, there are times where lasagna sounds like the ideal thing to have for dinner today, not tomorrow.
If this is one of those days, start the oven heating soon, because when wondering how long to cook frozen lasagna, the answer is about twice as long as normal. Use the recommended oven temperature for your recipe, usually 350 to 375 degrees F, and be sure the foil is secure on the dish to enhance the baking process. If you have already thawed the lasagna, it can bake in 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the size of the dish, the number of layers and the ingredients, such as mushrooms or zucchini.
If it is frozen, it can take as much as an hour to 4 hours because the center has the coldness that resists the intrusion of heat. It is important for the ingredients to send the flavors to one another and cook properly, as lasagna needs to reach a firm consistency to look like it should when served.
Some cooks use a meat thermometer to check on the cooking status, recommending a temperature of at least 165 degrees before the lasagna is ready to take out of the oven. One of the best things about using a clear glass baking dish is that you can visually see the sauce bubbling which indicates the lasagna is near the ideal heating point to remove the foil and bake for the final 10 minutes, after which it is ready to remove from the oven.
Appetizers to Serve Before Lasagna
Lasagna does not require side dishes, since it is already so hearty, but if you are catering for a special occasion like a dinner party, you might wish to prepare appetizers. Lasagna is filling so forget heavy appetizers. You might like to serve a simple dish or cubed or sliced Italian cheeses and meats over some dressed greens. Add beans, roasted peppers, olives, or artichoke hearts if you like.
You could omit the dressed greens and just offer the Italian meats, cheeses and some olives. Optional ingredients include sliced tomatoes, small radishes, and pickled mushrooms. Sliced fresh oranges fanned out and dressed with chopped fresh mint and a sprinkling of minced red onion is a light and refreshing appetizer.
Traditional Italian Appetizer Recipes
Bruschetta is a classic Italian appetizer recipe and to make this you need to toast or grill some bread with a topping. A nice topping is tomatoes, garlic, and olive oil. Add some chopped black olives if you like.
Sautéed roasted or braised baby artichokes are a lovely appetizer before lasagna. Trim off the outer leaves (these can be tough) and sauté them in olive oil until they start to turn brown, or cook them using another method. Then just dress them with lemon juice, salt and black pepper.
